Light Kit Armour Guide
Fitting, Maintenance and Durability
Light Kit armour is designed for LARP, cosplay, stage performance, immersive events, and costume enthusiasts who want the look of real armour without the weight and restrictions of steel. Built from a proprietary material blend, it combines realistic aesthetics with comfort, mobility, and ease of use.
This guide explains how to properly fit and maintain your Light Kit armour pieces for optimal durability.
What it's made of
The armour pieces are made from polyurea foam (plastic), giving them a realistic steel appearance while keeping them lightweight and comfortable.
Straps are made of full-grain leather.

Getting the Right Fit
For most wearers, tightening the straps is enough, as the polyurea foam parts naturally conform to the body during wear.
For a more precise fit, individual pieces can be reshaped using gentle heat from a hairdryer or heat gun on low setting. Apply heat from the inside of the piece to protect the painted finish. Once warm and pliable, bend by hand to shape. The armour will retain its new form after cooling.
Key rules:
- Never heat beyond a temperature comfortable to handle with bare hands - excessive heat can damage the finish or material!
- Make small adjustments gradually and test the fit between each step.
Caring for Your Light Kit Armour
Durability & intended use
Light Kit armour is built for conventions, events, photoshoots, and similar activities.
That said, it's worth being clear about what it's designed for. Light Kit armour prioritises comfort and wearability - it is not intended for full-contact combat, historical combat sports, or situations involving repeated heavy impacts. For those applications, steel is your friend.
With normal use, you should expect gradual cosmetic wear: scratches, scuffs, and paint wear, particularly on high-movement areas. This is completely normal and, as many of our customers discover, often adds character rather than detracts from the overall look.
Maintenance
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap
- Store dry, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and harsh chemicals
- Transport carefully to avoid unnecessary pressure or bending
- Check and replace straps, buckles, and rivets periodically
- Condition leather straps occasionally to prevent drying and cracking
Touching up paint
The base material of Light Kit armour is black, with surface paint and finishing applied on top. Over time, wear may expose the black underneath - this is normal and it's an easy fix.
Small areas can be repaired with standard acrylic hobby paints (Army Painter, Citadel, and similar brands work well).
- Clean the affected area
- Apply a suitable primer
- Allow the primer to dry completely
- Apply acrylic paint in thin layers
- Allow sufficient drying time before use
Colour variation between a repair and the surrounding finish is normal, especially on hand-finished pieces. In most cases this becomes less noticeable as the armour ages and develops its own natural patina.
What to Expect Over Time
With proper care, Light Kit armour is designed to provide many years of enjoyment. Lifespan depends on frequency of use, storage conditions, transportation, and the intensity of activities. Many customers find that the wear patterns and patina that develop over time add character and authenticity to their armour.
